About Ed Ables

When you work with Ables Construction you really work with me, Ed Ables. I enjoy working directly on projects and directly with customers. You’ll be seeing a lot of me so we may as well get to know each other a little better!

About Me

Working With Me: Clients describe me as friendly, meticulous, organized and very laid-back. I like the freedom, flexibility and creativity that being a self-employed contractor gives me. And I take great pride in getting the job done right and on time.

Family Life: I love having a family and being part of that lifestyle every day. Having recently become an empty-nester, I have more time for projects around the house, which I greatly enjoy. My wife, Linda, has excellent decorating tastes and ideas that she combines with my skills to bring her ideas to life and make our home beautiful.

Education: In addition to being a Class A licensed Virginia general contractor since 1990, I also graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in International Studies from George Mason University.

Building History: I’ve always enjoyed building and remodeling - everything from motorcycles to mansions! I’ve purchased and fully remodeled several homes. I’ve also built four homes, including the one that we live in now. Whenever I accept a project for you, I bring the same standards and pride in the outcome that I bring to my own projects.

FAQs

Unfortunately a lot of people have had bad experiences with general contractors and home remodeling projects.

Here are some questions I’m frequently asked that will help you understand how I’m different. Click on the question to see the answer.

  • A lot of general contractors focus on selling the next deal. After the project starts, they assign sub-contractors to the work and then disappear. Unfortunately, sub-contractors often don’t have the same credentials or commitment to quality.

I am an owner/operator. Which means I work directly on every project. When you work with Ables Construction you’ll be seeing a lot of me. I’ll never assign a team of sub-contractors and then disappear! I do bring a helper or two at some times, or bring in sub-contractors for work I am not licensed to do - but I always carefully oversee all the work they do.

  • No contractor should ever ask for a large deposit up front - particularly in these times when it may be a several month wait before work can start.

I may ask for a small deposit to get started, and I will lay out progress payments so you can be sure I remain accountable for getting the work done to your satisfaction. Final payment is never requested until all inspections have been passed.

I accept cash (including Venmo), check and most major credit cards.

  • Yes. I have been a Class A licensed Virginia general contractor since 1990. I also carry insurance in the unlikely event that it is needed (so far it never has been).

Please be sure to ask for proof of license and insurance from me (or anyone you might work with).

  • Please do!

If you go to the home page of my site and scroll down, you’ll see a list to get you started. But I’m also happy to provide contact information to a few recent clients.

  • Because I am present for all the major work and inspections, I communicate regularly with all of my clients.

As hard as we try to have a perfect plan, sometimes there are surprises. Supplies can’t be found, or an unexpected issue is found. You’ll know about potential delays or issues early on, and given time to make important decisions. And you can be confident that I will show up when I say I will - you should never have to wonder if your general contractor will show up or not!

When I communicate, I follow the “Powered by LUCK” plan. I start by (1) listening carefully to your vision, and (2) sharing plans and estimates so you can be sure I understand what you want before work gets started, and then (3) connecting with you throughout the project to be sure I’m on track, and finally (4) knowing I’ve met your goals during our final walk-through. Want to improve your LUCK? Work with a contractor with great communication skills!

  • I have been in business, as Ables Construction, since 1990. Most of that time I’ve been working in the Northern Virginia area.

Sadly, some contractors frequently change their company name, address or phone number, to hide from a large volume of bad customer reviews or even lawsuits. Do some web searches on me and you’ll find I’ve been in the area working responsibly for many years.

  • My quotes are competitive.

But, honestly, if you’re looking for a low-cost bidder, I’m not your guy. I bring over 30 years of experience, a commitment to excellence, outstanding communication skills and very high ethical standards to you and your project.

With Ables Construction you’ll get a fair quote and an ethical payment plan for outstanding results on your remodeling project.
